If you have never heard of or come across this particular herb then let's see what all the fuss is about. I had always thought this orange-brown looking powder was just one of many ingredients I used when preparing my favorite Indian cuisine, curry. It's what I add if I want to make it a bit more spicy and to colour my dish and nothing more.
So, I was surprised to hear about its link to a whole host of healthy benefits that shed some new light on my knowledge of turmeric. Such benefits include the following, but are by no means the whole list.
The ancient Chinese and Indian cultures knew about turmeric and used it to detoxify and cleanse their bodies. Recent studies show it has a positive effect on treatments of wounds and possesses antibacterial properties. It's highly regarded as an anti inflammatory and seen good results for sufferers of osteoarthritis, a major medical condition amongst the elderly.
When used to treat people with too high levels of cholesterol, initial evidence points to a reduction of bad cholesterol, important when dealing with something like arteriosclerosis. Certain digestive disorders have been alleviated by the use of turmeric.
It's a herb high in antioxidants, these all important compounds and substances which fight the damaging effects of free radicals, such as aging skin. If you are like me and take a daily nutritional supplement of any kind, you should check next time you go shopping for your usual brand that it has a turmeric extract included in its list of ingredients.
